INTRODUCTION

From the Office of the CEO:

To our students and families, and to our esteemed colleagues around the world,

After a number of strategic meetings at the very highest levels, and based on careful consideration by ECMAS senior administration, I am very pleased and honored to announce that The Emirates College of Media Arts and Sciences will locate its main campus and headquarters in Abu Dhabi.

We are tremendously impressed with the extraordinarily high academic standards and overall education vision for both the city and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, hand in hand with the creation of a global center of excellence for the arts and culture, and for numerous major media entities.

The Emirates College of Media Arts and Sciences (ECMAS) will be the first completely independent institution of higher education devoted solely to digital media studies in the entire Middle East, offering a 4 year Bachelor of Arts degree in four areas of study: Film and Digital Television, Broadcast Journalism, Digital Animation and Digital New Media Design.

ECMAS will initially be accredited by the United Arab Emirates Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) and the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Additionally, ECMAS will continue to establish bilateral cooperation agreements with a broad network of renowned international universities in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Australia/New Zealand for joint curriculum programs and projects, study abroad programs for students, and the exchange of high level staff.

Abu Dhabi is without question a crown jewel in the Arabian Gulf. The emirate is a blend of diversity: from the contemporary chic of downtown Abu Dhabi to the timeless Bedouin traditions of the surrounding mountains, deserts and the sandy beaches.

Spread over 87,340 square kilometers, Abu Dhabi is the largest of the seven emirates which make up the United Arab Emirates and accounts for more than 85% of the country’s total landmass. The UAE is one of the six members of the Arabian Gulf Co-operation Council.

Abu Dhabi city, built on the largest of almost 200 natural offshore islands in the emirate, is the capital both of the emirate and of the UAE. It is the federal seat of government and home to most ministries and institutions, embassies, state broadcasting facilities and oil companies.

Abu Dhabi’s population is currently around 1.6 million and is expected to grow by 6.8 per cent per annum over the next decade to a projected 3.4 million by 2015.

Abu Dhabi has an estimated 9.2% of the world’s proven oil reserves and 4% of its total proven natural gas reserves. The emirate has a per capita income of approximately US $30,000. Realizing the challenges posed by the country’s heavy economic reliance on finite carbon resources, the emirate’s leadership is actively pursuing economic diversification.
